Allison McCall
My work explores the tension between control and surrender, structure and spontaneity. Through layered surfaces and evolving forms, I investigate how memories, emotions and environments leave traces on both, materials and the subject matter itself. I am drawn to processes as a conversation rather than a fixed plan. To me, my drawings are like small islands where I can anchor and create. My focus is on moments that are felt more than seen, like a shift in mood, a pang of dread or a current moving underneath the surface.
The medium I presently use is water-soluble crayons on a variety of smooth papers. I work the surface, adding and subtracting, scraping, using washes, lines and colours until the final image is revealed.
