Nancy Byrtus is an emerging abstract and landscape artist who works predominantly with oils and acrylics. With a background in the preservation of historic buildings and employment at galleries and museums, Nancy went on to complete a Fine Arts programme at Emily Carr University of Art + Design in 2020. After living in Toronto as well as cities across Canada, the US and Europe, she has established a studio in Vancouver, British Columbia. This fall, she looks forward to building on her current body of work at the Similkameen Artist Residency.

The pieces you see at TOAF are abstractions painted in vivid colours. This series began as a study of mountain peaks and evolved to celebrate the tiny geometric forms visible in semiprecious stones. Although the paintings play with scale and abstraction, there is a timestamp to them as well; their colours and patterns are frequently employed in Mid-century design. The result of these influences is a series of images that are unabashedly playful and light-hearted.
